Welcome to the Department of Art at UIC

We are artists, creators, scholars, makers and innovators

The UIC School of Art & Art History's Department of Art is home to world-renowned artists who push the boundaries of contemporary art. We encourage intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, problem solving, and the cultivation of radical imagination.

The faculty provides students with the aesthetic and critical perspectives vital for a range of professional careers. Graduates have gone on to become artists, teachers, museum professionals, creative thinkers in industry and government, non-profit leaders, published authors and historians.

The UIC campus is an ideal setting for students to immerse themselves in the diversity of Chicago and take advantage of its dynamic artistic and creative communities. The studio courses at the heart of the UIC curriculum encourage independent research and engage students in the development of significant creative works. Students have access to top-of-the-line facilities for painting, sculpture, new media, moving image, video and photography. The size and scope of the UIC campus allows students to explore a wide range of courses in other disciplines while working towards their degree in the School of Art. Students also have access to Gallery 400, a dynamic, cutting-edge art gallery, and Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, a National Historic Landmark and museum committed to social justice.

We support numerous exhibition opportunities for undergraduates and graduates throughout the City of Chicago.

Students can obtain a BFA in Art (Studio Arts: Painting, Sculpture, Drawing; Moving Image, New Media, Photography), a Minor in Art, or an MFA (Studio Arts, Moving Image, New Media, Photography).
